Equipment

  • tofu press optional

Ingredients

  • 1 block firm or extra-firm tofu
  • 1 tbsp olive oil (or your preferred oil)
  • 2 tbsp soy sauce (or tamari for gluten-free)
  • 2 tbsp nutritional yeast
  • 1 tsp smoked paprika
  • 1/2 tsp garlic powder
  • 1/2 tsp onion powder
  • 1/4 tsp ground cumin
  • chili powder (optional for heat)
  • pinch of salt and black pepper
  • juice of 1/2 lime (optional for tanginess)

Instructions

  • Press the Tofu:
Drain the tofu and press it between two plates or using a tofu press to remove excess water. Let it sit for about 10-15 minutes.
  • Shred the Tofu:
Using a box grater or your hands, shred the tofu into fine pieces. This will give it a "pulled" texture.
  • Prepare the Marinade:
In a small bowl, mix the soy sauce, nutritional yeast, smoked paprika, garlic powder, onion powder, cumin, chili powder, salt, and black pepper. Add lime juice if using.
  • Coat the Tofu:
Place the shredded tofu in a mixing bowl and pour the marinade over it. Toss until the tofu is evenly coated.
  • Cook the Tofu:
Heat the olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Add the marinated tofu and spread it out evenly in the pan.
Cook for 5-7 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the tofu is slightly crispy and golden brown.
  • Serve:
Use the shredded tofu as a topping for tacos, in burritos, on salads, or as a filling for sandwiches.
